The Treasurer's role is fiduciary oversight — safeguarding and investing the county's cash. These are the same numbers I'd read every day to manage your money safely. Here they are in plain English, with what each one means for Chelan County.

Rates
Interest rates & the cost of money
This is the Treasurer's lane: the rate environment sets what the county earns on its cash and what it costs the county — and you — to borrow. Live 12-month mini-charts from TradingView — current value at top.

What this means for Chelan County
When the 10-year and mortgage rates rise, a Wenatchee home loan gets pricier — and so does the county's cost to borrow for roads, buildings, and equipment, which eventually reaches your tax bill. When short-term rates are higher, the county can earn more on the cash it holds for you — if it's invested safely. Reaching for yield at the expense of safety is exactly what fiduciary oversight is meant to prevent.
National view
The Treasury yield curve is the base price of money for the whole economy. Long rates above short rates (an upward-sloping curve) signal the market expects steady-to-firmer rates ahead. Mortgage rates track the 10-year closely.
Fiscal reality
National & Washington State debt
The federal debt and its interest cost — pulled live from the U.S. Treasury every time this page loads — alongside Washington State's own debt. They set the backdrop every level of government, including ours, operates in.

Washington State debt Annual figure
$28.0 billion
▲2024 annual reference · Reason Foundation / WA State Treasurer · updated yearly, not live
Each federal taxpayer now carries roughly $288,000 in total national debt. Rising federal interest costs put long-run upward pressure on the same rates the county borrows and invests at. A Treasurer can't change the national debt — but a careful one keeps the county's own finances conservative so local taxpayers aren't exposed to it.
National view
Total federal debt and the annual interest expense to service it. Interest is now one of the largest single lines in the federal budget — money that can't go to anything else.

What this means for Chelan County
Markets shape how confident local employers, retirees, and homebuyers feel. The VIX is the market's "fear gauge" — higher means more uncertainty. Public funds should never ride this volatility; the county's money belongs in safe, liquid instruments, full stop.

Broad equity indices (S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq 100) plus international benchmarks (Nikkei 225, FTSE 100), the dollar index, the VIX volatility gauge, and Bitcoin — a snapshot of risk appetite across the economy.

The dollar against the world
how far a dollar goes abroad
What one U.S. dollar buys in euros, yen, Canadian dollars, and Mexican pesos — fetched live every time this page loads. With Canada on our doorstep — and Mexico a major trade partner — the loonie and the peso are the ones to watch here.
What this means for Chelan County
A stronger U.S. dollar makes Canadian visits and online orders cheaper for us — but makes our apples, cherries, and other exports more expensive for overseas buyers, which matters to growers across the valley. The Canadian dollar in particular drives cross-border tourism and shopping both ways. Expect this to be a bigger local conversation in the years ahead.
National view
The dollar's exchange rate against the euro, yen, Canadian dollar, and Mexican peso — a read on relative economic strength, trade competitiveness, and global demand for dollars.
Local & commodities
What it costs to grow, build & live here
Chelan County runs on agriculture and the trades. Commodity prices show up in orchard budgets, grocery bills, and construction costs before they show up anywhere else. Quotes stream live from TradingView.

Gold
What this means for Chelan County
Fuel, lumber, metals, and grain feed straight into the cost of running an orchard, building a home, and stocking a kitchen here. When these climb, local families and growers feel it first — which is why a Treasurer should keep the county's own costs lean and its reserves steady through the swings.
National view
Energy, precious metals, and grains — core inputs that ripple through inflation and the cost of living everywhere.

Why this page exists
How I'd read these instruments for you
The numbers above aren't a hobby — they're the dials of the role. Here's the standard I'd hold.
Safety before yield
Public money is invested for safety and liquidity first. The county's cash is never a place to chase returns or take on market risk.
Plain-English transparency
Where the county's money sits, what it earns, and what it costs to borrow — reported clearly, the way this page reports the wider picture.
Steady through the swings
Rates and prices move. Fiduciary oversight means keeping reserves conservative so local taxpayers aren't exposed to the volatility above.
